Each year thousands of women are diagnosed with diseases and conditions related to their reproductive anatomy such as endometriosis, ovarian fibroids, various cancers, and dysmenorrhea. Many of these are wildly misunderstood stigmatized illnesses that scar and destroy internal organs causing extreme pain and, in some cases irreparable damage. In the case of endometriosis, an average diagnosis takes roughly 7-10 years due to the lack of knowledge and research being done for these issues.
While every patient is different, symptoms and severity of these conditions varying slightly from person to person, treatments often end with the same results: surgeries and/or hysterectomies. The emotions that one feels during their journeys dealing with these illnesses are widespread, therefore this body of work incorporates symptoms and situations that are a part of reality for thousands.
This work provides expressive insight on the reproductive issues that need more attention while also being relatable to the thousands of women out there struggling with similar issues. Photography is a medium that while capturing and recording surfaces, can also be employed to reveal things that cannot be seen through metaphorical and symbolic communication. This body of work utilizes fine art photographs that explore the physical, mental, and emotional presentations of these conditions.
